Usually exhibition games are played at the beginning of the college hockey season when teams are just starting to play together. But this year UMD played a challenging game against the US U18 National Development team. The Bulldogs really had to take this game seriously as they are continually trying to find a groove to push up the stakes of the season.
UMD did win the game against the U18s 3-1 in a good
showing. The win looks to start UMD off
on the right foot to start off their home stretch of the WCHA season. The Bulldogs have 10 conference games left
before March 9 when the regular season ends.
The Bulldogs are currently in 8th place battling
for home ice in the first round of the playoffs and have two important weekends
coming up as they play host to Denver and Minnesota State Mankato, both within
two points of UMD in 7th and 4th place respectively.
Wait for it. It may
be really good or the games may continue the baffling and frustrating season
for UMD.
Elsewhere… In the marquee match-up, Saint Cloud State went
to North Dakota and took three points.
With other results, SCSU has sole possession of first in the WCHA
despite a 3-5 non-conference record and a 15-10-1 overall record. That record would place them in fourth among
WCHA teams’ overall records.
Minnesota Twin Cities and Minnesota State Mankato played
home and home trading road wins. The
Gopher loss Friday keeps them in second place and the MSUM win puts them in a
fourth place logjam with North Dakota and red hot Wisconsin.
At Wisconsin, the Badgers just keep winning. After a horrid start to the season, the
Badgers have lost just once in their last 14 games.
A first occurred in Bemidji as Omaha gets their first sweep
against WCHA rival 5-3 and 2-1.
A pair of sweeps occurred in the CCHA for incoming NCHC teams. In Kalamazoo Western Michigan downed Michigan
3-2 and 5-1 while Miami hosted and defeated Bowling Green 3-1 and 2-1.
