WCHA Weekend Feb. 4-5

Mike Connolly Propels Bulldogs to Three Point Weekend

Hats off, literally, to Mike Connolly. His natural hat trick in Saturday’s game was three of his five of the night tying Pokey Trachsel’s school record (1972). Connolly tallied one more the previous night for a six goal weekend. Player of the week? Expect it.

UMD moves up to a tie for #2 in the PWR. Using the tie-breaker RPI ranking, the Bulldogs are #2 with North Dakota at #3.

Up next for UMD is Saint Cloud who was swept by host Nebraska – Omaha. The Huskies had a bad 1:41 in the second period on Friday night. The three goals allowed were enough for the Mavericks to win 3-0. In the Saturday rematch, the Huskies looked ready taking a 3-0 lead into the first intermission. But that was not to be as they lost the game 4-3 in the end completing the UNO sweep.

In Anchorage, the Seawolves completed their second consecutive home sweep over the Michigan Tech Huskies. The losses extend Tech’s winless streak to 24 and tied a WCHA record with 18 straight conference losses. Up next for Tech is good home cooking with the annual Winter Carnival.

In the Gold Pan series, another split occurred between rivals Colorado College and Denver. Just as happened this past fall, the home team won their respective games in this home and home series.

In Mankato, Bemidji State won Saturday night to salvage a split with the MSUM Mavericks. The Beavers prevailed despite being outshot 41-20. On shots and saves, look for BSU goalie Dan Bakala to take WCHA defensive player of the week for stopping 81 of 84 shots faced on the weekend.
